Specs To Look For In A Gaming Laptop

Design & Heat Management

Choosing a gaming laptop is not that different from how you’d choose a gaming desktop (of course, custom-built ones are a different story). But there is a big difference here, which is the laptop’s ability to keep itself cool for long periods of time despite its compact form. In other words, ‘heat management’. You will notice that this is not a big problem for a desktop but it can be for a laptop.

Other Hardware

Among other specifications you should pay special attention to are the quality of the graphics card and VRAM, CPU generation and display screen refresh rate. For new 2024 games at 1080p 60fps, you’d need at least a graphics card of NVIDIA GTX 1650 or the equivalent AMD RX 5500M, together with 4GB of VRAM, Intel i5-8300H or the equivalent Ryzen 5 3550H, and 8GB of RAM. But don’t worry too much about RAM as you can always get additional RAM sticks.

While you’re at it, get a gaming chair as well and complete your experience.

The Dell Alienware M15 is a mid-range gaming laptop (technically, mid-high) that is a good alternative if you don’t want to spend too much for a high-end gaming laptop. The specs are more than sufficient to play the latest games in 1080p 60fps very, very smoothly. Although there are many variations on the M15 (for example, Intel and Ryzen variants) with different specs, the one we chose offers Ryzen 7 5800H as CPU, GeForce RTX 3060 as GPU with 6GB of VRAM, and 16GB of DDR4 RAM. The RTX 3060 is a big step down from 3060Ti but it does offer good value for money. Storage-wise, this laptop has a 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD, which is okay lah. Display-wise, the screen is 15.6” FHD IPS (1080p) with 165Hz refresh rate, so if you’re looking to game more than 1080p, you’d have to look elsewhere. But Alienware puts some effort on the heat management on this one with left, right and rear vents to keep temp manageable. The keyboard is 4 zone RGB, and the OS is Windows 11. The laptop though is a bit heavy at 2.7kg.

The difference is noticeable but nothing to fret about. The VRAM though is only 4GB because it’s RTX 3050, and the CPU is a Ryzen 4800H which doesn’t perform higher than i5-12500H. RAM offered is 8GB and storage is 512GB and the display is a 15.6” 144Hz IPS which is pretty standard at this price point.
